Self-Made Journey of Robert Ovy Waddoups

In 1968, the Waddoups family sold their cattle ranch in Grouse, Idaho, and relocated to Phoenix, Arizona. Ovy, deeply rooted in his ranching heritage and small-town upbringing, began attending Arizona State University.

However, in 1971, inspired by a sense of duty and resilience shaped by his rural Idaho roots, he joined the U.S. Marines.

During his 20-year military career, Ovy was assigned to the Marine Detachment aboard the USS Providence (CLG-6), where he participated in key Vietnam War naval operations, including daring raids into Haiphong Harbor in North Vietnam.
